Laws of Official Downball

History

The laws were created by the 4 founders of Official Downball and then later by the Comittee

Laws


Law 1 (The players)



'1. 'Number of Players

A game is played between 2 or more players.



'2. 'Nomination of Players

All players willing to play shall inform the other players that they want to play. All players who are playing must be standing within the court with the exception of laws 1.2a and 1.2b if that condition is not met then that/those player/s shall not participate in that game.

a) A player may be granted permission to be seated at or off the court at the starting of a game provided that the majority of the players agree to it. If the player doesn’t join in by the time prior to a third of the players going out, he shall not be allowed to enter the game except by the majority of the players agreeing to let that player in to the game.

b) If a player wants to join in a game that has already started and he has not previously informed the other players, he shall only be able to join in if less than a third of the players were already out and two thirds or more of the players still in agree to let him in the game.

However a) and b) can’t occur in competitions or games that go towards ranking points.




Law 2 (The serve)



'1. 'The serve

The ball can be served by either throwing it or throwing it in the air then striking with the hand, the ball must then bounce once on the ground before hitting the wall and then land in the service area.



'2. 'Nomination of server

Whoever has the ball and then has intent to serve is the server.



'3. 'Fault

If the ball does any of the following it shall be considered a fault:

a) The ball bounces twice before hitting the wall.

b) The serve is interfered with See law 2.5.

c) The ball hits an object before hitting the wall.

d) The second bounce is outside the service area.

e) The ball hits an obstruction after it hits the wall.

f) The ball hits an obstruction after it has hit the wall and bounced once.

g) The server has served too many unreasonable serves.

h) The server has taken too long serve the ball.

The umpire shall then call “Fault” and that serve shall be considered a fault.



'4. 'Unreasonable serve

An unreasonable serve occurs if:

a) On the serve where the ball, after hitting the wall doesn’t go further than 50cm from the wall and 50cm from the ground.

b) The ball intercepts the wall at less than a 45˚ angle (horizontally).

The umpire shall then call “Unreasonable serve” and the serve will be replayed by the server.



'5. 'Too many unreasonable serves occurring

If two unreasonable serves have occurred the umpire will then call a fault. The umpire shall then let the player know that they have been faulted for serving two unreasonable serves. Once a player has been faulted for serving too many unreasonable serves the amount of unreasonable serves will then return to zero.



'6. 'Server taking too long

If the server has taken too long to serve the ball the umpire my then call “Fault” he must tell the server that he has been faulted for taking too long to serve the ball.



'7. 'Interference with the server

If the server is interfered with while serving the ball if:

a) The server is deliberately interfered with when about to or in the action of serving the person/s that interfered with the server. The serve will be replayed and the person/s who interfered with the server depending on how bad the interference was shall either receive warnings or be given out.

b) The server is interfered with accidently by someone else the serve shall be replayed by the server.



'8. 'Interference with the serve

If the serve is interfered with after leaving the server’s hand if:

a) The manner in which the server served the ball there was a high risk of the ball hitting another player the serve shall be called a fault.

b) A player deliberately interferes with a serve they shall receive a warning or given out depending on how bad their offence with the serve was.



'9. 'Double fault

If a player receives a second fault after already receiving a first fault they will be given out.




Law 3 (The wall)

'1. 'The wall

The wall shall be roughly 3.5m tall and 6m in width. The wall will preferably be made of either concrete or brick.












Law 4 (The service area)



'1. 'Dimensions of the service area

The service area shall be the same width as the wall. The sides of the service area shall be at right angles to the wall and the service are shall extend from the wall 6m or to the back wall if there is one.



Law 5 (Returning the ball)



'1. 'Returning the ball

To return the ball the returner must strike the ball once with any of their person have the ball then bounce once on the ground then hit the wall.



'2. 'The returner

The returner is the person who hits the ball.



'3. 'Returner failing to return the ball

If the returner fails to return the ball the umpire shall call “Out” and the returner who failed to return the ball will be out.



'4. 'Hitting the ball after returning it

If the ball is hit by the returner immediately after they have returned it or it has bounced once on the ground the umpire shall say “Hit the ball twice in a row” and they will be given out.




Law 6 (Carry)



'1. 'Carry

Carry occurs if the person returning the ball is deemed to have had contact with the ball for too long and has rather than hit it or in addition to hitting it carried the ball. The umpire shall then call “Carry” and the person who carried the ball is given out.




Law 7 (Player going out)



'1. 'When player given out

A player is out when they are given out by the umpire for any of the various ways which they can be given out.



'2. 'Where a player goes when given out

When a player is given out by the umpire they must either leave the court or go right to the back or the sides of the court whichever is appropriate to the venue which it is at.






Law 8 (Hitting the ball twice)



'1. 'Ball hit twice

The ball is hit twice if the returner hits the ball then prior to the ball hitting the wall the returner hits the ball again unless the returner is interfered with by another player. The umpire shall then call “Hit the ball twice” and the player who hit the ball twice will be out.



Law 9 (The court)



'1. 'The court surface

The court surface should be flat and should preferably be either be concrete or paved.



'2. 'The court size

The court should extend at least 6m from the wall and at least 5m from the sides of the wall.



Law 10 (Obstructions)



'1. 'Obstructions

An obstruction is any object on the court (e.g. a pole, tree etc.) that extends up more than 6cm from the court.



'2. 'Type 1 obstructions

Unless classified as type 2 obstructions all obstructions are considered to be type 1 obstructions. If the ball hits a type 1 obstruction

a) After being hit by the returner the returner is out.

b) On the full after the wall the person who returned the ball is out.

c) After bouncing on the ground after hitting the wall the rally will be replayed.



'3. 'Type 2 obstructions

Obstructions are normally classified as type 2 obstructions if they are right next to the wall. If the ball hits a type 2 obstruction

a) After being hit by the returner the returner is out.

b) On the full after the wall the rally will be replayed.

c) After bouncing on the ground after hitting the wall the rally will be replayed.

Law 11 (No one hits the ball) Edit

'1. Ball bounces twice or rolls

If the ball bounces twice or rolls in playing area the nearest player shall be given out


'2.Nearest player runs away

If the closest player runs away during the previous shot the player will be given out

a) If another player does make a genuine attempt to return the ball the player running away will not be given out


'3.'Interference

a) If interfered with while making a genuine attempt to play a shot:

.1 If the inference was deemed deliberate the player interfering will be given out

.2 If the interference was deemed accidental the shot will be replayed

b) If no genuine attempt is made to play a shot the player will be given out

c) If interference is made from a non-player (see Law 1 section 2) the shot will be replayed
